Renewing Our Iman Before It Wears Out

Renewing Our Iman Before It Fades

One truth we often forget is that iman is not fixed. It rises and falls. It grows strong and then becomes weak. At times, it feels alive, full of light, and close to Allah. At other times, it feels heavy, distant, and dry.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that iman wears out in the heart just as clothing wears out on the body, and he told us to ask Allah to renew it. That image is so powerful. Clothes do not become old and torn all at once — they wear down little by little. In the same way, the heart does not lose its faith overnight. It gradually fades when neglected.

This does not mean that every drop in iman is a sign of hypocrisy. Human beings are weak, and weakness is part of our nature. But neglect is dangerous.

We see this clearly in the famous story of Ḥanẓalah and Abu Bakr (RA). Ḥanẓalah felt alarmed by his own condition and feared that he was a hypocrite. When he was with the Prophet ﷺ, listening to reminders of Jannah and Jahannam, his iman rose so high that it felt as though he could see it before him. But when he returned to his family, his wealth, and his daily responsibilities, that intense feeling changed. He became occupied again by the dunya.

Abu Bakr (RA) said that he felt the same. So both of them went to the Prophet ﷺ to share their concern. The Prophet ﷺ reassured them that this was not hypocrisy. We are human. We have families to care for, work to do, and responsibilities to fulfil.

Islam does not ask us to abandon the world. Rather, it teaches us to place everything where it belongs: time for worship, time for family, time for work, and time for worldly needs.

This is the balance many of us struggle with. We speak about balance often, but in practice, the dunya can easily take over. Work, business, family concerns, phones, messages, and endless distractions fill our hearts and minds. Slowly, the Qur’an becomes secondary. We forget Allah more and more. Before long, even our daily prayers begin to weaken.

Allah tells us one reason hearts become rusted:

No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts with what they were earning.

(Qur’an 83:14)

Sin leaves marks on the heart. The Prophet ﷺ taught that when a servant sins, a black dot is placed upon the heart. If a person continues in sin, the heart becomes covered in darkness and, over time, hardened. The more we turn away from the obedience of Allah, the weaker the heart becomes.

Another reason Iman weakens is too much attachment to the dunya. We all have work, studies, bills, and responsibilities. These are not wrong. But when worldly concerns fill the heart, iman begins to decline.

We become lazy in worship. We rush through salah. We leave the sunnah prayers. We say we have no time for morning and evening adhkar, yet we find time for WhatsApp, social media, and endless scrolling. That is when we need to stop and ask ourselves honestly: What is happening to my heart?

So how do we renew our iman?

The first step is to return to the Qur’an. Allah says:

The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in iman.

(Qur’an 8:2)

The Qur’an revives the heart. It brings us back to Allah. Even a small daily connection with the Book of Allah can restore life to iman.

The next step is salah. Allah says:

Establish prayer for My remembrance.

(Qur’an 20:14)

Salah is not only an obligation. It is our direct connection with Allah. It brings the heart back to Him again and again. Allah also says:

Indeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing.

(Qur’an 29:45)

A strong prayer protects us from sin. It keeps the heart awake and helps us stay away from the things that darken iman.

Another way to strengthen iman is through righteous company. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a person follows the religion of his close friend, so we should be careful about who we keep close. Good company pulls us toward Allah. Bad company pulls us away.

We also need reminders and circles of knowledge. Allah says:

And remind, for indeed the reminder benefits the believers.

(Qur’an 51:55)

When we distance ourselves from reminders, the heart becomes dry. Coming to the masjid, praying in congregation, attending lessons, and sitting with people of knowledge all help revive iman. The masjid is not only a place of prayer; it is a place where the heart is awakened and strengthened.

Finally, we need du‘a. We must ask Allah to renew our iman, keep us firm, and guide us back whenever we become weak. Allah says:

And those who strive for Us — We will surely guide them to Our ways.

(Qur’an 29:69)

This gives us hope. Allah does not abandon the one who is trying. When we take steps toward Him, He guides us. When we struggle against our nafs, He helps us. When we return sincerely, He opens the way.

So let us not wait until our hearts become hard. Let us check our iman regularly. Let us renew our connection with the Qur’an, salah, dhikr, righteous company, the masjid, and sincere du‘a.

O Allah, renew the iman in our hearts. Remove the stains of sin from us. Make the Qur’an the light of our hearts, salah the comfort of our souls, and righteous company a source of strength for us. O Allah, keep us firm upon Your deen, guide us to what pleases You, and do not leave us to ourselves for even the blink of an eye.

Ameen
