When we think about the early days of Islam, names like Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the brave companions often come to mind. But there’s one incredible woman whose strength, wisdom, and unwavering support were absolutely vital: Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her). Often called “Mother of the Believers,” her story is truly inspiring and deserves to be known by everyone.

A Powerful and Respected Woman

Khadijah (RA) wasn’t just any woman in Mecca. She was a highly successful and wealthy businesswoman, a sharp mind, and someone who managed her own vast trading empire. In a society where women often had limited roles, Khadijah stood out as independent, respected, and incredibly intelligent. She was known for her integrity, her sharp business sense, and her noble character. People admired her for her generosity and her strong moral compass. She was even given the title “Tahira,” meaning “The Pure One,” long before she met the Prophet.

How She Met the Future Prophet

Khadijah (RA) needed someone trustworthy to manage her caravans and trade journeys. She heard about a young man, Muhammad, who was known for his honesty, excellent character, and reliability. Impressed by his reputation, she hired him. Muhammad (peace be upon him) excelled in his work, proving himself to be even more upright and successful than anticipated. His integrity and gentle nature deeply impressed Khadijah.

Despite being fifteen years older than him and having been married twice before, Khadijah (RA) saw something truly special in Muhammad. It was her initiative that led to their marriage. She sent a trusted friend to propose to him, an uncommon move for a woman at that time! Muhammad (peace be upon him) accepted, and their marriage became a cornerstone of his life.

The Best Wife a Prophet Could Ask For

Their marriage was one of immense love, respect, and partnership. Khadijah (RA) was not just a wife; she was his greatest supporter, his confidante, and his rock. She bore him several children, including his beloved daughter Fatimah.

But her greatest role began when Muhammad (peace be upon him) received his first revelation in the Cave of Hira. He returned home trembling, confused, and deeply shaken by the divine encounter with Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). It was Khadijah (RA) who calmed him, reassured him, and immediately believed him. She didn’t doubt him for a moment. She comforted him with these timeless words: “Allah will never disgrace you. You uphold the ties of kinship, you speak the truth, you bear the burden of the weak, you help the destitute, you entertain guests, and you assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.”

These words show her deep understanding of his noble character and her unwavering faith in his truthfulness. She was the very first person to believe in his message, the very first Muslim.

Her Unwavering Support and Sacrifice

Throughout the difficult early years of Islam, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) faced intense persecution, ridicule, and hardship, Khadijah (RA) was his constant source of strength. She spent her vast wealth supporting the fledgling Muslim community, providing food, shelter, and financial aid to those in need. She endured the boycotts and hardships alongside him, never complaining, always supportive.

Her presence alone was a comfort. The Prophet (peace be upon him) often sought solace in her wisdom and calming presence. She was truly a gift from Allah to him.

Her Legacy Lives On

Khadijah (RA) passed away just a few years before the Prophet’s migration to Medina, in what is known as “The Year of Sorrow.” Her death was a tremendous blow to him, leaving a void that was deeply felt for the rest of his life. Even after her passing, he never stopped remembering her with immense love and gratitude. He would often speak of her virtues and sacrifices, reminding his later wives of her unparalleled status.

Khadijah (RA) is a beacon of light for all Muslims, especially for women. Her story teaches us about:

  • Strength and Independence: She was a successful businesswoman in her own right.
  • Love and Partnership: Her marriage was a model of mutual respect and deep affection.
  • Unwavering Faith: She was the first to believe in the Prophet’s message, offering instant, unconditional support.
  • Sacrifice: She gave everything she had – her wealth, her comfort, her life – for the sake of Islam.

Khadijah (RA) truly was the “Mother of Believers,” not just by lineage but by her actions, her character, and her profound impact on the early days of Islam. Her untold story is a powerful reminder of the incredible women who shaped our history and continue to inspire us today.
