The tribulation of Dajjal, the emergence of ‘Esa bin Maryam and the emergence of Gog and Magog
Abu Umamah Al-Bahili reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) warned: “No trial on earth will be greater than that of the Dajjal. Every Prophet has warned their nation about him. If he appears while I am here, I will confront him for all Muslims. If he comes in my absence, defend yourselves, for Allah will protect you on my behalf. The Dajjal will emerge from Al-Khallah, between Sham and Iraq, causing chaos. O servants of Allah, remain steadfast.”
I will describe him to you in a way that none of the Prophets has described him before me. He will start by saying, “I am a Prophet,” and there will be no Prophet after me. Then, a second time, he will say, “I am your Lord.” However, you will not see your Lord until you die. He is one-eyed, and your Lord is not one-eyed. Written between his eyes is the word “Kafir.” Every believer will be able to read it, whether they are literate or illiterate.
Part of the Dajjal’s Fitnah (trial) will be that he will possess both Paradise and Hell, with Hell resembling Paradise and vice versa. Those tested by his fire should seek Allah’s help and recite the first verses of Surah Al-Kahf, which will make the fire cool and safe for them, as it did for Ibrahim (Abraham).
He will deceive a Bedouin by saying, “If I resurrect your parents, will you testify that I am your Lord?” The Bedouin will agree, and then two devils will appear as his parents, urging him to follow the Dajjal.
Additionally, the Dajjal will kill a servant, saw him in half, and then claim he can resurrect him. When resurrected, the servant will declare, “Allah is my Lord, and you are Dajjal.”
Abul-Hasan Tanafisi reported that Muharibi said ‘Ubaidullah bin al-Walid quoted Abu Sa’eed: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said that a certain man will hold the highest status in Paradise.” Abu Sa’eed noted that they believed this man to be ‘Umar bin Khattab until he passed away.
Muharibi said, “We returned to Abu Rafi’s narration.” He mentioned that part of the fitnah (trial) will be that he can command the sky to rain and the earth to produce vegetation. If he passes by a disbelieving clan, all their flocks will perish. However, if he encounters a believing clan, he will command the sky to rain and the earth to bring forth vegetation, resulting in their flocks returning that evening larger and fuller than ever before.
There will be no part of the earth he does not conquer except for Makkah and Al-Madinah. Angels with unsheathed swords will prevent him from approaching their mountain paths. He will stop at the red hill near the marsh, and Al-Madinah will tremble three times, causing all hypocrites to emerge. This city will be purified, and the day will be known as the Day of Deliverance.
Umm Sharik bint Abi Bakr asked, “Where will the Arabs be on that day?” The Messenger of Allah replied, “They will be few, mostly gathered in Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem), led by a righteous man. When he stands to lead them in the subh prayer, ‘Eisa bin Maryam (Jesus) will descend among them.”
Their leader will step back to let ‘Eisa lead the prayer, but ‘Eisa will encourage him to continue, saying, “Go forward and pray, for the Iqamah has been called for you.” After the prayer, ‘Eisa (as) will command, “Open the gate,” revealing Dajjal with seventy thousand Jews, each carrying an adorned sword and wearing a greenish cloak.
When Dajjal sees him, he will begin to melt like salt does in water. He will flee, but ‘Eisa (as) will declare, “I have only one strike for you, which you will not be able to escape!” ‘Eisa (as) will pursue him to the eastern gate of Ludd, where he will ultimately defeat him.
Then Allah will defeat the Jews, and there will be nothing left that Allah has created for them to hide behind, except that Allah will cause it to speak. No stone, no tree, no wall, and no animal will remain silent—except for Al-Gharqad (the box-thorn), as it is one of their trees and will not speak. However, it will say: “O Muslim servant of Allah, here is a Jew; come and kill him!”
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The days of the Dajjal will number forty years: a year will feel like half a year, a year will feel like a month, a month will feel like a week, and the rest of his days will feel like sparks from a fire (i.e., they will pass quickly). One of you will enter the gate of Al-Madinah in the morning and not reach its other gate until evening comes.” It was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, how should we pray during those short days?” He replied: “Estimate the times of prayer, as you do on these long days, then pray.”
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) also said: “Eisa bin Maryam (AS) will be a just judge and a just ruler among my nation.”
He will break the cross, slaughter the pigs, abolish the Jizyah, and charity will remain. No one will be appointed to collect the Zakah from sheep and camels. Grudges and mutual hatred will vanish, and the poison of every venomous creature will be removed, so that a baby boy can put his hand in a snake’s mouth and it will cause him no harm, while a baby girl can make a lion flee without being harmed. The wolf will live among the sheep like a sheepdog. The earth will be filled with peace, just as a vessel is filled with water. People will be united, and none will be worshipped except Allah.
War will end, and the Quraysh will lose power. The earth will flourish with vegetation, allowing a group of people to gather around a single bunch of grapes or a pomegranate, which will be enough to satisfy them. An ox will sell for a certain amount, while a horse will cost only a few dirhams, as they will no longer be used in war. Oxen will be more expensive because all the land will be cultivated. Before the Dajjal appears, there will be three years of severe famine, causing great suffering among the people.
In the first year, Allah will command the sky to withhold one-third of its rain and the earth to withhold one-third of its produce. In the second year, He will withhold two-thirds, and in the third year, all rain and produce will cease, leading to the death of all cloven-hoofed animals except those Allah wills to spare.
When asked what the people will eat, it was said they would survive on Tahlil, Takbir, Tasbih, and Tahmid. Abu ‘Abdullah (Ibn Majah) noted that this Hadith should be shared with teachers for children in schools.
