`SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) gave a sermon to the women and asked them if they agreed with what was said in the Quran. One woman replied yes, and he then encouraged them to give alms.

Ibn ‘Abbas reported: I participated in the Fitr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthman, and all of them observed this prayer before the Khutba, and then he (the Holy Prophet) delivered the sermon. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended (from the pulpit) and I (perceive) as if I am seeing him as he is commanding people with his hand to sit down. He then made his way through their (assembly) till he came to the women. Bilal was with him. He then recited (this verse): O Prophet, when believing women come to thee giving thee a pledge that they will not associate aught with Allah” (LX. 12) till he finished (his address to) them and then said: Do you conform to it (what has been described in the verse)? Only one woman among them replied: Yes, Apostle of Allah, but none else replied. He (the narrator) said: It could not be ascertained who actually she was. He (the Holy Prophet) exhorted them to give alms. Bilal stretched his cloth and then said: Come forward with alms. Let my father and mother be taken as ransom for you. And they began to throw rings and ringlets in the cloth of Bilal.

Exhortation of Women to Give Alms

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivering a sermon to women and exhorting them to give alms.

Ibn ‘Abbas reported: I bear testimony to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering prayer before Khutba. He (after saying prayer) delivered the Khutba, and he found that the women could not hear it, so he came to them and exhorted them and preached them and commanded them to give alms, and Bilal had stretched his cloth and the women were throwing rings, earrings and other things. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ayyub with the same chain of transmitters.

QUICK LESSONS:

Give charity/alms regularly with sincerity for Allah’s sake alone; preach patiently even if some are unable to understand you properly due to distance or any other reason etc..

EXPLANATIONS:

This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad’s sermon to women in which he exhorted them to give alms. It was reported by Ibn ‘Abbas and Ayyub that the Prophet offered prayer before delivering his sermon. He noticed that the women could not hear him so he went closer and preached them. During this time, Bilal had spread out a cloth for collecting donations from the women who were throwing rings, earrings and other things into it as charity or almsgiving. This hadith teaches us that giving charity or alms is an important part of our faith as Muslims and we should strive to do it regularly with sincerity in our hearts for Allah’s sake alone. It also shows us how much importance was given by the Prophet Muhammad towards teaching people about their faith even if they were unable to hear him properly due to distance or any other reason; he made sure they understood what he said by going closer so they could understand better what he was saying.
