Today, I’m excited to dive into a vital aspect of Islam: the concept of trials and tests. This topic opens up so many meaningful discussions! Let’s explore two key questions together: Why does Allah put us to the test, and how can we maintain a positive attitude when facing these challenges? I look forward to sharing insights and learning from each other!

Why does Allah test us?

“It is He who created death and life to test which of you are best in deeds, for He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.” (Qur’an 67:2)

Many religions preach that trials and tests are always sent as punishment from God. They claim that if you are afflicted with a hardship, such as sickness or loss of wealth, it means you have somehow displeased God. However, this is NOT true in Islam. In Islam, there is no correlation between our present situation and Allah’s attitude toward us. For example, if I lose my job, it doesn’t mean that Allah is angry at me. On the other hand, if I get a pay raise at my job, it doesn’t mean that Allah is happy with me. Instead, Allah presents us with these different situations to see how we react to them.

IIn the beautiful verse from the Quran, we learn that tests and trials are an essential part of our journey in life. Each of us will face challenges at different times, allowing Allah to observe our true faith and intentions. It’s a reminder to reflect on whether we’re performing good deeds for the right reasons or just when it’s easy.

The wise words of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) remind us: “Nothing befalls a believer, not even a thorn, without Allah elevating their status or forgiving a misdeed” (Bukhari). This profound hadith highlights two key reasons for the tests we face. First, they serve as a means for growth, guiding us toward resilience and deeper faith. Let’s embrace these challenges with optimism, knowing they can lead us to greater clarity and connection with our purpose! you have the opportunity to successfully go through the test with the right attitude, and Allah will therefore raise your station in Paradise.

One important reason for facing challenges in life is that I may have made mistakes and not sought Allah’s forgiveness. Instead of awaiting punishment in the Hereafter, Allah, in His boundless mercy, allows me to experience trials here, ensuring that they are far lighter than what I could face later. Each trial is thus an opportunity for growth and reflection.

As Muslims, it’s essential to approach these tests with a positive mindset. By keeping things in perspective, we can recognize these moments as valuable lessons, fostering strength, patience, and faith. Embracing challenges not only helps us improve but also deepens our relationship with Allah, encouraging us to seek forgiveness and strive for a better path. Let’s face our trials with hope and gratitude!

1. Keep it in perspective

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.” (Qur’an 2:286)

A person will never be faced with a bigger hardship than they can handle. A lot of times, when we’re going through a trial, we become so focused on the trial that we lose sight of everything else. For example, if a person loses a job, they will often focus on what they don’t have and will forget what they do have, such as their health, family, or (if nothing else) their faith.

Embracing what we have instead of dwelling on our challenges truly brightens our outlook! Remembering that Allah only places trials in our path that we can manage gives us a beautiful perspective on life. No matter what we’re facing, we can hold onto hope and patience, knowing that we possess the strength to overcome. Let’s stay positive and trust in our resilience, for brighter days are always ahead!

2. Allah always does what’s best for us

“And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” (Qur’an, 2:216)

Allah is reminding us of something very important here. He is saying that when we are faced with something, we see the here and now. We don’t truly understand the big picture. Therefore, we see things as good or bad because we can only see what’s physically happening in the present.

Let’s consider the situation of getting a flat tire—it’s definitely an annoyance! But what if that flat tire was a blessing in disguise? Just think, it might’ve spared us from a worse fate, like encountering a reckless, drunk driver further down the road. Sometimes, what seems inconvenient at first can protect us from unforeseen dangers. It’s a beautiful reminder to stay positive and trust that there’s often a hidden purpose behind life’s challenges!

It’s important to remember that every challenge we face comes with meaning and purpose. The beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that Allah’s love for us surpasses even that of our mothers. Just as a caring mother would never lead her child to hardship without reason, we can trust that Allah does the same. Each test we encounter is an opportunity for growth and understanding, even if we can’t see the bigger picture right away. Embrace these moments with hope and faith, knowing they nurture our journey.

Here’s a little analogy that beautifully illustrates how we often can’t see the purpose of our challenges until we’ve emerged on the other side. Reflecting on my childhood, I remember my parents being quite strict about how much dessert and soda I could have. At the time, I thought their rules were unfair and felt they were being harsh. Now, as an adult, I truly appreciate their intentions! They were focused on my well-being and wanted to ensure I grew up healthy by limiting my sugar intake. Although I could only see the immediate restrictions then, they were actually thinking ahead, acting in my best interest even when it didn’t make sense to me. It’s a wonderful reminder that sometimes, challenges and limitations are blessings in disguise, guiding us toward a brighter and healthier future!

Allah’s love for us is truly remarkable! While we may sometimes desire something deeply yet find it out of reach, or encounter challenges, it’s important to stay focused on the bigger picture. Instead of questioning Him, let’s embrace the understanding that Allah always has our best interests at heart. By trusting His plan, we can be confident that these moments are shaping our journey for the better.

3. Remember the importance of thankfulness and patience

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him. If he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him.” (Muslim)

This is one hadith that we should always keep at the forefront of our minds. There are very few periods in our lives where things are simply neutral. Most of the time, things seem to be progressing or it seems as if the entire world has turned against us.

One of the aspects I love above the above hadith is that it shows us how powerful our attitude is because our attitude shows Allah our faith in Him. Our attitude can make a positive situation better and turn a negative situation into a positive situation. In other words, if things are going well and we remain thankful and humble, Allah will turn a good situation into a great situation. As Allah promises in verse 7 of Surah Ibrahim, when we are thankful, He will give us more, Insha Allah.

On the other hand, if things are not going well but we remain patient and steadfast (i.e. have sabr), then Allah will bring about some good from the situation, and the situation will eventually be alleviated.

This hadith should give us hope that no matter what we’re going through, Allah has not abandoned us. We just need to maintain the right attitude toward the situation and good faith toward Him.

4. The rewards of a test are always greater than the test itself

“Surely there is ease after hardship. Aye, surely there is ease after hardship.” (Qur’an 94:5-6)

Scholars have pointed out something truly inspiring about this verse: the use of a definite article in the Arabic text shows that while the verses refer to the same struggles, they highlight different rewards and eases. Essentially, Allah is reminding us that every challenge we encounter can lead to incredible rewards, especially when we approach them with the right mindset!

Knowing that Allah promises us victory for facing difficulties positively makes it so much easier to remain steadfast during tough times. A wonderful example of this can be seen in the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). After dedicating nearly thirteen years to preaching Islam in Mecca, only a few embraced it before the migration to Medina. Yet, just a decade later, the entire Arabian Peninsula embraced Islam, with tens of thousands of Muslims joining the Prophet (PBUH) on his final pilgrimage to Mecca.

Insha’Allah, may Allah protect us from hardships, but if we do face challenges, may He grant us the patience and positive attitude to overcome them. Together, let’s embrace the journey, knowing that every trial can lead to beautiful rewards!
