One of the most remarkable qualities of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is his incredible mercy. The Qur’an celebrates him as “a mercy to all the worlds” (21:107), a title that truly reflects his spirit. “Absolutely! He would repair his shoes, sew his clothes, and take care of his household just like any of us do in our own homes,” she enthusiastically replied. Such a wonderful reminder of his humility and relatability!
After the passing of his beloved mother, Amina, when he was just six years old, his devoted nursemaid, Ummu Ayman, stepped in to lovingly nurture him. The Prophet ﷺ always cherished her kindness and, as he grew older, he freed her and wished her well in life. Though her husband sadly passed away, the Prophet ﷺ spoke highly of her, saying that marrying her would be a connection to Paradise. Zaid ibn Haritha embraced this opportunity and married Ummu Ayman, often referring to her as “my mother after my mother.” His frequent visits and heartfelt affection display the deep gratitude and lasting love he held for those who cared for him in his formative years.
Picture this heartfelt moment: the Prophet ﷺ stands by the grave of his beloved mother, Amina, who departed from his life when he was just six years old. Decades later, at 59, his eyes glisten with tears, and his heart is filled with prayers as he embraces this poignant memory, all against the historic backdrop of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. This scene beautifully illustrates the deep compassion and kindness he showed to everyone, regardless of their position in society. Remarkably, a young slave girl could take his hand and lead him wherever she needed, reflecting his gentle nature. Throughout his life, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passionately championed the respectful treatment of women. When his cherished son Ibrahim was born, his joy knew no bounds. He often visited ‘Awali near Madinah, cherishing moments cradling Ibrahim, showering him with affection, and comforting him in a uniquely fatherly way. The profound grief he felt when Ibrahim passed away in infancy was incredibly moving. Holding his son one last time, tears streamed down his face as he expressed his heartbreak, saying, “Ibrahim is my son, and he has passed away while still in the age of nursing.” This heartfelt connection reminds us of the depth of parental love and the joy and sorrow that come hand in hand with it.
His tender compassion also extended to his grandchildren, Hasan and Husayn. Whenever they approached, he would embrace them, kiss them, and shower them with affection. When asked who was dearest to him, he ﷺ immediately replied, “Hasan and Husayn.” Once, Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis, a companion, observed the Prophet ﷺ kissing his grandson and remarked, “I have ten children and have never kissed any of them.”
“He who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy,” he ﷺ gently responded,
On another occasion, as he led prayer, his prostration became unusually prolonged. When asked why, he explained, “My son has mounted me, and I disliked to rush him until he finishes his need.” This image of the Prophet ﷺ, at the height of his devotion, patiently allowing a child to play on his back, reflects his gentle nature. He would rush to console Fatimah whenever he heard Hasan crying, saying, “Did you not know that his crying hurts me?” And then there was Umamah, his granddaughter, the daughter of Zaynab. He would carry her in his arms during prayer, gently setting her down as he bowed and prostrated, only to lift her again when he stood. Such scenes of love and devotion paint a picture of a man whose life was steeped in affection and mercy.

Upon receiving the devastating news, the Prophet hurried to visit Ja’far’s wife, Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her), requesting to see his children. When they arrived, he embraced them tightly, tears of compassion flowing down his cheeks. Asma, sensing his heartache, asked about Ja’far, and with a heavy heart, he shared the news of his martyrdom. Afterwards, the Prophet returned home, encouraging his family to support Ja’far’s family in their time of need. He reminded them, “Do not neglect the family of Ja’far; prepare food for them, as they are enduring a great hardship.” This touching moment highlights the Prophet’s deep empathy and commitment to community caring.
The companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) beautifully witnessed the immense love and compassion he had for children. He would happily invite the children to sit with him, call them by name, treat them to sweets, and pray for their happiness. Remarkably, he never showed any annoyance if a child had an accident; instead, he would simply clean up with a smile, fully understanding their innocence. Anas ibn Malik had a younger brother who cherished a small pet bird. When the bird sadly passed away, it left the young boy feeling heartbroken. Upon learning of his sorrow, the Prophet ﷺ graciously left the masjid to comfort him. With genuine kindness, he approached the grieving child and kindly asked, “O Abu Umayr, what happened to your little bird?” The Prophet’s ﷺ presence instantly brought comfort, as he enveloped the boy in warmth and compassion. He demonstrated that no sorrow is too insignificant to acknowledge, offering solace with his heartfelt words and actions. Through this beautiful moment, he beautifully exemplified the mercy and love he was sent to share with all of creation.
Let’s explore the uplifting journey of Zayd ibn Thabit, an extraordinary young man who, at just thirteen, displayed remarkable courage and determination. Inspired by this conviction, he turned to his mother to share his aspirations. Zayd’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the eagerness to learn!
With unwavering determination, Zayd eagerly set out to memorize the beautifully revealed parts of the Quran. His proud mother recognized his remarkable talent and shared it with the companions, who excitedly brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. They exclaimed, “O Prophet ﷺ, this young boy recites and writes the Quran splendidly! He yearns to be close to you and the Quran.” The Prophet ﷺ listened attentively, clearly impressed by Zayd’s sharp intellect and passion. He encouraged, “Zayd, learn the language of the Jews for me!” What an inspiring moment for young Zayd!
In an inspiring moment, the Prophet ﷺ sought the assistance of the Jewish community for writing and translating letters in Hebrew, yet he aspired for a new direction. Remarkably, within just a few days, Zayd mastered the Hebrew language! His journey didn’t stop there; he soon took on the challenge of learning Syriac, the language of the Syrian Christians. This determination led him to become a trusted writer and translator for the Prophet ﷺ and eventually one of the esteemed scribes of the Quran. This uplifting story beautifully illustrates the power of compassion, the importance of nurturing a child’s dreams, and the creative ways we can unlock their potential!
The Prophet ﷺ embodied a remarkable and deep compassion for those who are weak and vulnerable. Anas ibn Malik had the privilege of serving him for ten years and never once felt impatience or blame. Anas fondly recalled, “He never said ‘Uff!’ to me, nor did he question what I did.” On one occasion, when Anas got sidetracked by the joyful laughter of playing children, the Prophet ﷺ kindly approached him with a radiant smile, gently holding his collar. With warmth and encouragement, he said, “O Anas, go where I asked you.” This beautifully illustrates the Prophet’s patience and uplifting spirit!
