This level of anxiety can hinder a person from reaching their full potential and disrupt their ability to carry out normal daily activities.

Many students face challenges that can affect their performance, particularly during exams, which may lead to feelings of anxiety. This common issue, often referred to as “exam anxiety,” can cause them to blank out and feel unable to showcase their true abilities. Additionally, the fear of being judged can create reluctance to engage in social activities, such as visiting the mosque, meeting friends, or even working out at the gym. When these fears disrupt daily life, they can become serious concerns. It’s important to recognize that these challenges can arise from various mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, and there is hope for support and improvement.

“Absolutely! Anxiety can kick in whenever you feel that exhilarating rush of fear, making your heart race. It can show up in various ways, like sweaty palms, shaking, or those butterflies in your stomach. Many folks, including speakers, performers, and students, often experience stage fright. It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous before a presentation, but it’s important to keep those feelings from getting in the way of showcasing your amazing talents on stage!”
- Does experiencing anxiety or struggling with mental illness indicate a lack of complete faith in God?
It’s common for some to assert that challenges with mental health arise from a lack of faith in God’s plan. However, I see things differently. Many deeply devoted believers may find themselves facing health issues where faith doesn’t play a primary role. While spirituality can certainly be a source of strength and well-being, it doesn’t fully capture the intricate nature of mental health.
Throughout my journey, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with many Muslim clients. Time and again, I notice that they often turn to their Sheikh for advice, which may include suggestions for increased prayer, supplication, or studying the Quran. While this guidance comes from a place of deep care and intention, it’s important to recognize that spiritual practices alone may not fully address the intricate nature of mental health challenges. Seeking help is not only a courageous step but also an essential one; it should never be seen as a sign of weakness in faith or dedication to one’s beliefs. Embracing support reflects true strength, and there is always a pathway toward healing and personal growth on this journey.
Many individuals wrestle with feelings of guilt when they struggle to pray, and I understand that my perspective might be unconventional. I often encourage clients who find it difficult to pray to allow themselves the grace to take a break from it if it feels out of reach. I compare this to having a broken arm or leg: when you’re injured, functioning at your best is simply not possible. If you’re unable to complete your prayers due to ongoing struggles, it’s completely okay to engage with what you can manage—whether that’s performing parts of the prayer or simply honor the ritual as best as you can. We often overlook the value of our daily Salah, especially when it has been woven into our lives from a young age. Remember, it’s perfectly fine to embrace the mindset of “fake it till you make it.”

This approach often surprises my clients, especially as a religious woman might not typically suggest such an idea.
